Chronicle

In a recent issue of your paper there appeared a report of an address on spiritual healing by a clergyman. Therein he mentions Christian Science in connection with spiritualism, and we shall be glad if you will allow us space to correct the impression conveyed that they are in any way similar or united. Christian Science has nothing in common with spiritualism; its teachings inculcate the antithesis of mediumship, or belief in communication with the dead. Mrs. Eddy herself states on page 71 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "I never could believe in spiritualism." The clergyman says: "We learn one or two things from Christian Science. We learn the value of silence and meditation in prayer;" but he also states, "There were several things in it that made us feel sad." What these things are is not reported; but let us say that Christian Science is flourishing all over the world because it is bringing to humanity that of which it is so sorely in need. It presents a practical, demonstrable Christianity, ushering in a joy and peace indescribable, resulting from an understanding of God and of His will for His children, the divine will which Christ Jesus came to fulfill. For over sixty years Christian Science has been following the command of the Saviour to heal the sick as well as to preach the Gospel and reform the sinner. Through a close study of the Scriptures, Mrs. Eddy learned that it was the knowledge Jesus had which accomplished the rescue of mankind from the ills of the flesh. His knowledge of the Father, of His laws and their operation, and of true sonship was so exact, so vital, that in spite of overwhelming opposite testimony he healed instantanously those who came to him for healing, and raised the dead, thus establishing and upholding the works of God, in contradistinction to the imposition of the beliefs of a false sense of sin, disease, and death—the works of the devil.

Christian Scientists are proving that the prayer of all Christian denominations is being answered: "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." Thousands are joyfully discovering that this kingdom is "at hand" and "within you"—as the Master affirmed, and that a right understanding of God and man's relationship to Him is bringing that kingdom nigh. Christian Science has given to the world once more the ever present Healer of the world's woes, "the living, palpitating presence of Christ" (Science and Health, p. 351).
