In your recent issue there appears a report of a sermon preached by a clergyman at Como, in which some statements are made that may give a wrong impression as to the teachings of Christian Science; therefore, I ask space to make brief correction. This preacher asserts that "Christian Science says that there is no sin in the world, when Christ died on the cross for the redemption of sin;" and he alludes to Christian Science as "squirrel food." Christian Scientists do not claim that there is "no sin in the world;" on the contrary, Christian Science has revealed to mankind the way by which sin can be overcome. Paul admonishes that the old man with his deeds must be put off and the new man put on, which means that the mortal with all its corruption must be put down, not submitted to. The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus proved him to be the Way-shower. He suffered the experiences he did in order to show mortals that there is a way to overcome sin, sickness, and death. His followers, profiting by his experience, did wonderful healing and regenerating work after he had disappeared from their midst. This way of salvation, pointed out by Christ Jesus, has been made clear to this age through the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, her principal work being the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." This book, by the way, is a commentary on the Scriptures; it explains them, and thereby enables the reader to understand the thought of the writers of the books of the Bible, and therefore to do the works of healing that they did. That all have not obtained this spiritual understanding of the Bible is clear; for if such were the case there would not be so many sects and varying theories about the writings of the Bible. When the Bible is correctly understood, the students of it will be able to prove their faith by their works; and so the Science of Christ, Christian Science, can be proved as it is understood. Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them."

Concerning the overcoming of sin, Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 99): "Human philosophy, ethics, and superstition afford no demonstrable divine Principle by which mortals can escape from sin; yet to escape from sin, is what the Bible demands. 'Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,' says the apostle, and he straightway adds: 'for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure' (Philippians ii. 12, 13). Truth has furnished the key to the kingdom, and with this key Christian Science has opened the door of the human understanding. None may pick the lock nor enter by some other door."
