I attended my first Wednesday evening testimony meeting...

I attended my first Wednesday evening testimony meeting without knowing anything of Christian Science or knowing any one interested in it. On hearing the testimonies I wondered if any of them were true. I attended these meetings about two months, and then went one Sunday to a morning service. I shall always be grateful for that beautiful service and for the harmony of the surroundings. The Lesson-Sermon was on the subjects of "Spirit," and I felt as if each word were spoken especially for me. I felt so uplifted, and seemed to gain a little understanding. I met a friend at the service who asked me to get a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I applied at the Reading Room, and when told the price of the book, felt at first as if I could not spare the money. The lady lovingly offered to lend me a copy, but I felt I should have one of my own, and so decided to buy a copy that day. I wish also to express my thanks for the love shown me. I was under a great sense of lack, resentment, lonesomeness, and sorrow; and this kindness meant much to me. From my first reading of the opening words of the Preface to our textbook (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," I knew that I had found something real to lean upon.

For five years before taking up the study of Christian Science I had been under the constant care of physicians for what they called a broken vertebra at the base of the spine. During all this time I had constant pain in my back, foot, and right hip. I had special shoes made so as to make walking easier, but was in constant fear of stepping on or off a car, or of going up or down stairs, or of the least jar to my back. All kinds of false laws were laid down for me as to where my ailments would eventually lead. I was told that the time would come when I should not be able to walk or move. I was sent from one specialist to another. Each one would examine me, take a blood test and an X-ray picture, then shake his head and send me elsewhere. The last physician I went to wanted to try a new so-called cure for spinal ailments, which would have meant putting me in a plaster of Paris cast from my head to my feet and keeping me strapped to a board for about six weeks. As I did not have the necessary money, this treatment was not tried. About this time, through the breaking up of my home, I was forced to seek employment, but was told that I would not be able to stand the work for three months. My need was very great, however, so I secured a position. At this time I was led to Christian Science.

After reading the Christian Science literature and attending the church services very earnestly for about eight months I heard a testimony given of a healing of curvature of the spine, and I was almost overwhelmed when I saw that I had on high-heeled shoes and not the special shoes which I had been wearing for over six years. Without any thought of my back I had bought new shoes; and I then realized that I had been healed of the so-called incurable spinal trouble. This healing took place over five years ago, and I have never had a return of this ailment. I have not missed one day from business on account of illness in the six years that I have been working. I have been able to overcome all sense of lack and inharmony, and am learning to express more love to my fellow-men.
