Christian Science came to me at the darkest time of my life. Materia medica had failed to help me; those to whom I had looked for love and protection had betrayed that trust; and life to me seemed indeed nearly at an end.

A lady working on a Christian Science literature distribution committee, who had faith enough to know that the bread which she cast upon the waters would return "after many days," gave me some of the Christian Science periodicals. Although I could not understand the terms used in the periodicals, still I read them all, and kept every one that came to me. I had been searching for God for many years, in poetry and good literature, and had tried to follow what I understood of Christ Jesus' great example to men; but the churches had failed to satisfy me; and to me the Bible was a closed book.

I had read new-thought, and had groped along many years striving to learn the answers to my questions in regard to life, death, God, the meaning of Jesus' death, the atonement, resurrection, and why we were to "believe on the name of the Son of God" and be saved. Therefore, when materia medica had done all that it could, and left me hopeless and despairing, I turned to a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel with the thought, If there is anything in Christian Science, that is all there is left for me.
