Christian Science does not heal through the so-called power of suggestion, nor does it teach that the manipulation of the human (mortal or carnal) mind, the accredited vehicle of mental suggestion, has power to heal. Paul wrote to the Romans, "To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." If God is good, then the law of God must be good; therefore, any good influence must be the expression of spiritual-mindedness or the direct result of the divine Mind.
The loving and tender mother, whose birthright it is to express and radiate the good influence which includes such qualities of God as patience, meekness, love, self-forgetfulness, purity, and affection, imparts to her child that love with which Jesus healed the fears and diseases of mankind. The Apostle John said, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear. ... He that feareth is not made perfect in love." Thus may we understand the importance of not catering to the human (mortal or carnal) mind, from which arise fear, anxiety, worry, doubt, and sin; for the influence of such a mental state is not of good, or God, and therefore cannot heal. What benefit would come to mankind if each one would watch his thoughts and actions in order that his influence might express the love which comes of God! When a little child turns naturally to a mother for comfort or support, it does so with absolute faith and confidence in her ability to make things right. If we would place as much faith and trust in our heavenly Father as the little child does in its earthly mother, we should undoubtedly become receptive of His healing power, which would meet our every need. "Except ye ... become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."
