Among the Churches

Newton Progress

Newton, Massachusetts (First Church).—Ground has been broken for the new Christian Science church, at the corner of Walnut and Otis Streets, Newtonville. The style is a colonial adaptation of the classic, worked out with red brick and contrasted stone trimmings. The result will be great simplicity and dignity. The liberal size of the lot gives a fitting setting for the church, and permits beautifying the grounds with attractive shrubbery and trees, supplementing those of maturer growth already there.

It is in the interior, however, where there are the greatest variations from the usual church interior. This is most noticeable in the treatment of the floor and seats. The floor is sloping, with seats in semicircular arrangement, this being the form adopted in auditoriums where ideal conditions of seeing and hearing are desired. The ceiling carries what is known as the three-point arch. The seating capacity of the auditorium is approximately six hundred and forty, including the rear gallery, but the construction is such that side galleries may be added, should a future need for them arise. The location of the new church in Newtonville makes it central to all the Newtons and Waltham.

The church was organized early in 1913, and the first service was held early in February of that year in Players Hall, West Newton, where the services are now held.
