Our critic says, "There is a false philosophy which blindly closes its eyes and says there is no such thing as disease." Christian Science does not blindly close its eyes to the manifestations of sin and disease, but is wide-awake to the utter falsity of their claims; and by reason of this alertness is able to destroy them. Jesus never used material means in his healing work, nor recommended them to his followers. He used the same process for the healing of sin as for the healing of disease, and it was purely spiritual.
Jesus was able to destroy disease, sin, and death by reason of his clear understanding that there is no reality in them. He knew that the real man—God's man—never suffers, sins, or dies, and that sin and disease are simply a part of the one evil, or devil; and thus he was able to cast out the evil by recognizing its utter falsity. He knew that sin and disease are simply manifestations of that mortal or carnal mind which the Bible declares is "enmity against God." His unobscured realization that God has no knowledge of this so-called devil or evil, and that its claim to reality is false, that it is without origin, substance, power, or continuity, enabled him to destroy its seeming reality; and this is the method taught and practiced by Christian Scientists to-day.
We are in hearty accord with our critic when he says Jesus was antagonistic to disease and came to destroy the works of the devil. We will go further and say that Jesus did destroy the works of the devil, and commanded his followers that they should do likewise. It is assumed that he expected them to accomplish these results by the same method that he used; and Christian Scientists are humbly trying to do this, and are grateful that they are meeting with some measure of success. They will continue to persevere in their efforts in this direction, and by the manifestation of more love, charity, patience, and humility, they hope to attain better results.
