It was in 1908 that I first heard of Christian Science
It was in 1908 that I first heard of Christian Science. I was a medical nurse at the time; and while I was on a case, an inmate of the house told me a little about it. I, however, rejected and ridiculed it; and not until two years later did I procure the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, hoping in a somewhat superstitious manner to be cured of the depression, restlessness, and unhappiness with which I seemed to be burdened. The chapter on Prayer was read through, with the result that I realized I had never truly prayed in my life; so I forthwith discontinued what I had thought to be prayer. Finally I read the book through; but then I put it aside, as I could not understand it. As I was going to British East Africa to nurse, I decided to stop at Pretoria to see a Christian Science practitioner. There I had my first treatment, and some of the simple truths of Christian Science were made clear to me. Periodicals were given me for a year, and with these, together with Science and Health and "Miscellaneous Writings," by Mrs. Eddy, I caught faint glimpses of Truth.
My life in the hospital where I was working was very lonely, and my surroundings were uncongenial. I was extremely unhappy, and wanted to get away at any cost, so as to return to South Africa, where there was a community of Christian Scientists. Dimly I perceived I must await God's guidance. After eighteen months of service, when I had decided I must make the best of things and had ceased to try to escape, I was suddenly released in a most wonderful way. This gave me my first idea of the meaning of demonstration. I then came to Johannesburg.
I have had many healings, one of the earliest being over what is called lupus, which had spread itself half over my cheek. My amazement and joy, when I found on rising one morning that the patch was fading away, I can scarcely describe. An acute sense of lack has been overcome, and lonesomeness and excessive self-pity have been healed. Progress has been slow; but as retarding material beliefs and a false sense of happiness have been given up, circumstances have altered, and home and friends and plenty have been manifested.
