Admissions
Contemplation of the following, given us by Mary Baker Eddy on page 167 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," has led to watchfulness and alertness on the part of one Christian Science student to detect the nature of "the claims of good or of evil" seeking admission into thought: "Our proportionate admission of the claims of good or of evil determines the harmony of our existence,—our health, our longevity, and our Christianity."
All students of Christian Science are working on the universal problem,—the attainment of ultimate harmony, which harmony Christian Science plainly teaches is heaven for each one. The time it will take to solve this problem will depend upon our faithfulness to divine Principle in all our thinking and living. Suggestions of good and of evil come to each and every one for admission into consciousness; and divine Love supplies the intelligence and the understanding to decide which shall be welcomed in and which barred out. Each one is porter at his own mental door and is responsible for his own thinking.
The solution of the problem of harmonious existence is continuous: "Good demands of man every hour, in which to work out the problem of being" (Science and Health, pp. 261, 262). When we meet with difficulties, some kind friend may sit down by us and point out the mistakes in our work; but we ourselves have to solve the problem according to unerring divine Principle, if we wish to experience the peace, joy, and happiness which are always the answer to work faithfully and correctly done. Divine Love is, however, always working with us. The apostle said, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;" but he added, "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
