My first healing in Christian Science came through reading...
My first healing in Christian Science came through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. For over a year I had been suffering from a strange disease which seriously affected my eyesight and hearing, and which had destroyed the senses of taste and smell. Much pain and inconvenience was endured. After consulting a physician many times, and also two specialists, besides using many so-called home remedies without relief, I remembered some healing experiences told me by a friend who was a student of Christian Science. I had noticed that it was her habit when sickness or trouble came to study some book, the name of which I did not know. It seemed to me if I could obtain that book my problems would be solved; and I obeyed this divine guidance and borrowed a copy of Science and Health from a neighbor.
When the book was finished, I found myself healed not only of my physical ailments but of many wrong beliefs, some of which had been with me from childhood. Among the latter was nightmare caused by fear of a terrible judgment day and the destruction of a material world by fire. After I had read Science and Health the fear disappeared. I had been accustomed to use many druggist's supplies, such as hand lotions, hair tonics, cold cream, special soap for tender skin, and many other remedies for both my children and myself, but I found these were no longer needed. This healing was instantaneous, and did away with a large monthly drug bill which was usually far behind in payment. I began to realize how free God's man should be from fear of weather and drafts. Instead of fearfully bundling my body with clothes, I found comfort with fewer clothes.
Truly, a book which has healed such a multitude of wrong thoughts is worthy of great regard. My eager acceptance of the truth, and the many instantaneous healings accomplished, I have since understood, were due to the fact that faith in old religious beliefs and in material ways and means had been relinquished and I had become receptive to something better. For five years Christian Science has been the only physician needed for either my children or myself. I am very grateful for faithful, loving help from practitioners, and for many demonstrations of our own.
