Supply is spiritual

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” It cannot be said that Jesus made this statement without due consideration of the needs of mankind, for in the few words preceding it he summed up in a wonderful way these needs and the natural way spiritual law meets them.

How many Christian Scientists there are who feel that supply is a problem not easily solved! Yet the fundamental teaching of Christian Science is based on the allness of God, good, and on man as God’s reflection. These facts, carried to their logical conclusion, certainly show that man has an infinite supply of good. At the same time, there certainly seems a difficulty with many in proving this. We ask ourselves, Where does the fault lie? Probably just here,—that we are not whole-hearted in seeking “first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness,” although we may think we are, until we thoroughly analyze our thought and find out our actual motives in this respect.

First, what do we consider our needs to be,—food and clothing? Yet Jesus, who was truly practical, said, “Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat?…or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?” Or do we think we need, perhaps, more comfort, an easier time, more beautiful surroundings, greater advantages for ourselves or our children?
