"Christian Science is based entirely..."

Times

Christian Science is based entirely upon the Scriptures. The first tenet of the Christian Science church is, “As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life” (Science and Health, p. 497). As a child Mrs. Eddy showed an unusual understanding of the Bible. Her pastor, the Rev. Enoch Corser, minister of the Congregational Church of Tilton, New Hampshire, took special interest in her, and regarded her as his brightest pupil (The Life of Mary Baker Eddy, by Sibyl Wilbur, p. 33). As a woman Mrs. Eddy continued to be a consecrated student of the Bible. When injured in an accident, which it seemed to her friends and physician might be fatal, she turned to the Bible and, through the practical application of the truth found in Matthew 9:2, was instantaneously healed.

After her wonderful healing she wanted to give to humanity the underlying Principle of the healing; so she retired from the world for three years, studied the Bible, discovered how Christ Jesus healed, and then fully explained her discovery in “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.” Mrs. Eddy’s teachings are evangelical because they follow faithfully the direct command of Christ Jesus to “heal the sick,” and are in keeping with his saying, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.”

Mrs. Eddy was a pure, gentle, high-minded woman, and these qualities fitted her to perceive the vital truths of the Bible. In teaching her students, writing her books, founding her church, she waited for divine guidance before acting. She was never “guilty of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.” She was truly humble, and recognized that it is the power of God that destroys sickness and sin. The fact that marvelous healing is done through Christian Science proves that Mrs. Eddy’s interpretation of the Scriptures was not absurd, but truly inspired.
