Daily News
Your issue of recent date contains an article in which faith cures were fairly and tolerantly commented upon, but in which an erroneous impression was given of Christian Science, which requires correction. The critic is to be commended, however, on his attitude of refraining from speaking or writing on subjects “that I don’t know much about . . . and therefore have no right to discuss or criticize.” Such an attitude, if generally adopted, would accelerate the appearance of universal Truth, and the assurance and happiness resulting therefrom. Through lack, no doubt, of knowledge, Christian Science was described as a faith cure, being associated with new-thought and similar activities. But Christian Science has nothing in common with human mind suggestive methods, such as autosuggestion, mesmerism, and hypnotism, and in practice and results is quite different from faith healing and faith cures. In mathematics faith alone will not solve a problem, but an understanding of the rules of mathematics and the correct application of them will obtain the desired results. Likewise, not merely faith in but an understanding of God, Love, the all-knowing and all-powerful Spirit, and the correct application of His spiritual, eternal laws, as possessed and demonstrated by the Master, Christ Jesus, is essential in the practice of the Science of Christianity. We are admonished to “let this mind [spiritual understanding] be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”
Christian Science heals so-called organic as well as so-called functional diseases, as tens of thousands can testify, this result being the proof of the application of the law of God, “who healeth all thy diseases” and with whom “all things are possible.” Christ Jesus did not discriminate between functional and organic troubles: he healed “all manner of disease among the people.” There is no basis outside of men’s wisdom, which “is foolishness with God,” for limiting divine healing to functional diseases. Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in the textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (p. 162), “Christian Science heals organic disease as surely as it heals what is called functional, for it requires only a fuller understanding of the divine Principle of Christian Science to demonstrate the higher rule.”
