I came to Christian Science because physicians advised an operation for a serious physical condition, which seemed to be undermining my health in mind and body. When I inquired if they were sure the operation would heal the mental disturbance, for that seemed by far the most distressing, the physicians replied that they thought so but were not absolutely certain. However, we began to make arrangements for the operation, from which I hoped I should never recover, because I believed that I inherited a tendency to insanity and that the only way to escape was to die.

A friend to whom I wrote at this time, although not a Christian Scientist, advised me to try Christian Science before resorting to surgery, saying that it could not harm me if it did not cure me. She invited me to her home to meet a Christian Scientist, who, she said, would be very happy to tell me something about it. I gladly accepted, and listened eagerly to every word the lady said, because it gave me the first ray of hope I had known in many months. I was advised to purchase a copy of “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy, and to commence reading it. This I did, and with the mental help which this Christian Scientist gave me conditions began to improve. Needless to say, the operation was never performed. I could not tell just when the healing occurred; but I realize now that as fear, anxiety, worry, and so on, were overcome in consciousness, a better physical condition was the result. The fear of that wretched inheritance was destroyed almost immediately. I rejoice daily in the freedom from that and many other fears, which was made possible for me and for all mankind because of the purity of thought and consecration to God of one unselfish, courageous woman, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. Since fear had been my god for so many years, is it any wonder that I rejoice now that I have found the true God, who is Love?

For at least fifteen years Christian Science has been the only physician in our family of four. Scarlet fever, grippe, sprained ankles, a case of blood poisoning, and all other physical manifestations which have tempted us to believe in a power other than God, good, have been overcome through the application of the truth as taught in Christian Science by our own understanding or with the loving help of some Christian Science practitioner.
