“I am very grateful to be able to make a report…”
I am very grateful to be able to make a report of the power of Truth, as we are taught to know it in Christian Science through the study of “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy. My experience may have in it help for others.
It was on a Friday. The lesson reading of the morning impressed me. The subject for that week was “God the Preserver of Man." The Golden Text was Psalms 121:8, and the Responsive Reading was Psalms 91:1-12. A friend urged me to take an automobile trip with him. Before we started, my wife gave me this quotation: “In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.” It was raining and the road was slippery. I repeated the quotation silently as we rode along. My friend, who was driving, volunteered the statement that the car was working perfectly. When about thirty miles out we ran upon fresh oil, and a car ahead slowed down without warning. My friend applied the brakes instantly. Our car skidded, took a nose dive into the ditch, turned on its left side, rolled over on its sedan top, and slid about thirty feet bottom side up.
When the car began to roll I had opportunity for one thought,—God is ever present. Glass was broken in the windshield and windows, and the car was considerably damaged. My friend, who is not a Christian Scientist, held the position at the wheel, which is regarded as the safest place in an accident. He was removed to a hospital for treatment for broken bones, and was told by the surgeons that it would be two months before he could use his arms. I was able to proceed to a telephone and report to my family that what injuries I had were very slight. I called upon my friend at the hospital, and then returned home. I thanked God throughout the greater part of the night, and held to the truth that there could not be any reaction (see Science and Health, p. 419), and that healing comes from God. The next day I proceeded about my business affairs as usual, and received innumerable congratulations upon what people declared to be a miraculous escape. By constantly affirming the truth and by repeated expressions of gratitude for God’s protection, I was able to erase from thought the picture of the scene.
