Health

It may be safely said that the thing most coveted by mankind is health. No search has been more vigorously prosecuted, no goal more persistently striven for, than that of health or well-being. The methods which have been resorted to in order to gain this precious boon have been many and varied; and yet, how often have the results fallen far short of what was hoped for, and all because humanity has been looking for health where it never has been and never will be found,—in matter.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” (p. 120), “Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor can the material senses bear reliable testimony on the subject of health.” This is being proved by the healing of all manner of disease through the application of the truth of this statement. Mrs. Eddy herself proved it true beyond any question of doubt. Christian Science teaches that Mind is God, and, as we read in the epistle of James, the source and Giver of every good and perfect gift. Consequently, health, instead of being a condition of matter or something that inheres in a material body, is a quality or attribute of God, divine Mind. It follows, further, that man, whom the Bible declares to be the image and likeness of God, must of necessity reflect that which belongs to his creator.

We also learn from the Scriptures that this divine Mind, or God, is infinite, ever present. Therefore, health, a quality of Mind, must be ever present, unlimited, and available to every one of God’s children as their divine heritage. So health is purely a mental state, not to be found in any particular locality or gained by any material process, but to be attained by coming into closer communion with divine Mind, and by learning the truth about God, the one perfect Being, and about man, His expression, through whom God manifests all the divine qualities of health, harmony, and freedom.
