Most of those who turn to Christian Science do so to be freed from some kind of evil,—suffering, temptation, or sin. And whenever this positive teaching has been honestly applied, they have found what they have been seeking. Thousands of adherents in all countries acknowledge this gratefully. They have begun to understand that the only reality is God and His creation, spiritual, harmonious, and eternal. But they do not deny that to erring mortal sense the temporal and evil seem to be an awful reality. If, however, evil were real and eternal, how then would salvation ever be gained? Christian Science does not make a trifle of, nor neglect the belief of evil; neither does it indifferently turn away from sin and sickness, saying, "Peace, peace; when there is no peace." It annihilates evil, not by suggestion, but through an understanding of Truth, thus making free.

On page xi in the Preface of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, its author, says: "The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation."
