In 1910 I went for a summer holiday to a little village near Interlaken; and there I found Christian Science. For many years I had been a sufferer from rheumatoid arthritis, supposed to be hereditary. I was still able to struggle through my office work, but with increasing difficulty; and I spent my Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings taking medical baths, in addition to daily home treatment. My holidays had been devoted to cures at various places in England, Scotland, France, Sweden, and Italy. I was steadily growing lamer; my hands and feet were painful and inflamed; and I saw nothing ahead of me but permanent pain and invalidism. I suffered also from sick headaches and bronchial colds, which kept me periodically indoors.
That year it was decided there should be a family holiday at some place unconnected with medical treatment, of which I was sick and tired. And so God sent me to Ringgenberg, where an American lady told me about Christian Science, and lent me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was ready for it. It was pure joy to throw away the blisters and ointments and potions which made life a burden. Next day I found I could not get any pleasure out of tobacco, which previously I had regarded as a necessity. Then I began to see that some new and powerful influence had come into my life. Returning home, I had treatment from a practitioner, who explained the teachings of Christian Science to me, and through whose work I was greatly helped.
To-day I am a different person. The lameness has disappeared, and I can walk as much as I like. I can drive a motor car with complete comfort of feet and hands. I have lost the old fear of weather and foods. I appear to be a much younger man than I was in 1910. I find that in the measure that I trust divine Principle, I can always do whatever has to be done. I am especially grateful for God's protection during the three years when I served as Reader.
