The prophet Isaiah said, "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light." An experience I had enabled me to see something of the "great light." As I was turning a box containing eight one-gallon cans of maple syrup, the box slipped, thrusting a projecting nail into my arm. Immediately I knew the truth, as we are taught it in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, that "there is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter" (p. 468); and this helped me to realize that no more harm could come from that nail entering my arm than from its passing into a piece of wood. Thus fear was overcome. On page 393 of the same book Mrs. Eddy says: "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation. Your body would suffer no more from tension or wounds than the trunk of a tree which you gash or the electric wire which you stretch, were it not for mortal mind." Each suggestion from mortal mind of poison or inflammation was quickly overcome by the transforming power of Truth, which was evidence of a law in operation, spiritual law, which is under the government of God. I learned that one cannot drift inside the gate of harmony, but that the goal is won only through honest, persistent right endeavor.

"And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."
