Several years ago I went from the East to Oklahoma...

Several years ago I went from the East to Oklahoma City to live. At first I thought it would be a good plan to acquaint myself with nice people through a Baptist church; also to do some singing there. This I tried briefly; but it was made clear to me how weaned away from the church I had become. I could not bring myself to attend for any reason. A Christian Science couple in the house where I also had a room just naturally let their light shine. Until meeting these dear people I did not know there was such a thing as Christian Science in the world. They wisely made not the slightest attempt to influence me in any way. I heard them read aloud once in a while and thought it sounded nice; and I even went to church once or twice with them.

One evening, in a casual manner I picked up the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and asked if I might take it to my own room. After making myself comfortable, I opened the book at the chapter on Prayer; and it was at this point that Christian Science was its own interpreter to me. The realization of its spiritual beauty and import dawned with such a conviction that henceforth it was impossible to wish for or accept any other guide. From that memorable awakening the Christian Science textbook and all of Mrs. Eddy's other writings, together with the Bible, were my constant companions; and I allowed neither work nor play to interfere with the study of them. Christian Science at once meant everything to me: it opened up a new world, the old world beginning to pass away.

The futility of material remedies was early seen; and I at once abandoned the habit of using cathartics as a preventive and curative drug. Minor ills, such as bilious attacks and colds, disappeared. A sprained ankle was healed in a day; symptoms of appendicitis, brought on by acute worry, were overcome; a faint or lapse into unconsciousness was overcome at once. Whatever the physical disorder during these more than ten years, Christian Science has healed it. But above all, I am grateful for the gradual change in character and the process of being transformed by the renewing of the mind, thus proving what is the "good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
