When first hearing of Christian Science some twenty...
When first hearing of Christian Science some twenty years ago, I expressed my opposition to it by declaring that I did not concede to it the power to heal broken bones. Three years ago last January, I was called upon to determine definitely the verity of my contention.
While endeavoring to prevent a garage door from slamming against a car fender, I fell heavily, having slipped on some grease on the concrete floor. My first sense of consciousness was an excruciating pain in the left arm at the elbow, which arm had been doubled under my body in the fall. I arose, went to work mentally in the way Christian Science teaches, and very soon everything seemed overcome except the pain in the arm. Some three hours later, the pain being as bad as ever, I called upon a Christian Science practitioner. Some relief from the pain was received during treatment. About four o'clock that afternoon I took the train from St. Louis, where the incident occurred, for Pittsburgh. That night I experienced a great sense of pain,—so great that I was unable to grasp anything I read in either the Bible or our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I determined, upon arrival in Pittsburgh, to reach a practitioner. This was done, and the pain was overcome so completely that I did not thereafter suffer in the slightest degree. Because of the badly swollen condition of the arm, a physician upon whom I called could not make a diagnosis. Upon his recommendation, X-ray photographs were taken, which clearly showed the fractured and dislocated condition.
As I was living in Chicago at the time, I started home that evening, first wiring to the practitioner in St. Louis for further help, at the same time inquiring if, in his opinion, the arm should be set. Upon my arrival in Chicago the following day, a wired reply left to me the determination of setting the arm. I felt so strongly the truth that "with God all things are possible," that I could not bear to think of helping God manifest an harmonious condition. Although the arm remained very badly swollen and black for about three days, the swelling and blackness extending from the shoulder to the finger tips, we stood firmly with the truth and awaited the perfect manifestation. Within ten days from the occurrence of the accident, I was carrying a brief case with this arm. Within three weeks the stiffness had disappeared. Since that time I have not spared it at all, using it as I should had this experience never occurred.
