It should be remembered that the membership of the Christian Science churches is composed largely of those who have been healed of so-called hopeless disease after every known material remedy had failed. Turning as a last resort to Christian Science, seeking the aid of Him "who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases," they have discovered that "man's extremity is God's opportunity," and have been restored to health and regenerated. Mrs. Eddy most certainly recognized and appreciated—as do all Christian Scientists—the grand, noble lives of many medical men, their self-sacrifice, devotion, and untiring energy in helping mankind. It is in times of darkness and despair, when all that the most loving human effort can do has failed, that Christian Science reveals a new hope, which teaches its adherents, maybe through what has seemed a miraculous healing, to rely entirely on God—the creator and preserver of His own works—and on the promise of Christ Jesus, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
