[Original testimony in German]
My dear wife suffered from heart trouble and nervousness...
My dear wife suffered from heart trouble and nervousness, which were becoming worse. She was frequently bedridden; and we were in despair, as we believed there was no longer any help. I too suffered greatly from ailments caused by the war. I had been struck with full force by a grenade, so that my chest was crushed and a vertebra injured, causing me severe pain. In addition to this I had suffered a nervous shock and was scarcely able to attend to my work. My wife was also unable to attend to hers.
Our troubles increased from day to day. We sought for help, but did not find it. Every channel seemed closed, and our troubles became almost unbearable. But how good God is! Here one may exclaim, Where the need is greatest, God is there! One day my work led me to a house where, while working on a cupboard, I saw the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I picked it up, read several lines, and immediately asked what sort of book it was. The woman to whom it belonged replied that it had to do with healing; it had been given to her while she was ill during her stay in America. I borrowed the book and read it diligently. Three weeks later I was obliged to return it. I wanted to do several days' work and thus buy the book; but the lady would not give it to me. I noted the source of publication of the book and wrote to Boston; whence I was sent a copy gratis. I also received a copy of Der Herold der Christian Science and the Lesson-Sermons, which are very helpful in my study.
Through much reading and study we finally realized that Life always was, always is, and always will be omnipresent; and with this understanding we disregarded the material body and always turned only to the one Mind, which we began to understand as God. This comprehensible divine Mind, to which we clung, helped us to master and overcome fear; convinced us that man is free from sickness and danger, and that God governs everything lovingly and never punishes anything but sin. This knowledge, which is victorious over the belief in matter, brought us better health; and we learned through Christ, Truth, as revealed in Christian Science by our beloved Leader, to see that sin, sickness, and death are unreal, and that when God is understood, when divine Principle is grasped, we can put His ideas into practice.
