Daily Herald
The Herald recently published an article entitled, "The Different Forms of Healing," in which the writer, a medical man, referred to Christian Science. The tolerant tone of this article is gratifying, and is in accord with the attitude of many liberal-minded physicians to-day. The writer of the article, however, expressed the opinion that those who practice other forms of healing, including Christian Science, should be required to possess a fuller knowledge of the body, and of physical functioning and physical conditions. Such a course of study would be of no benefit to a Christian Scientist, who is seeking, instead, to gain a fuller knowledge of the divine Mind, God, and of man in God's image and likeness. What is most important in the cure of disease is an understanding of the Science of divine Mind, and this can best be obtained by studying the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Many physicians are progressively discovering and freely acknowledging the importance of considering the mental state of the patient. Christian Science is proving the value of a definite knowledge of mental cause and effect in healing disease.
Jesus of Nazareth is admitted to have been the most successful healer who ever lived. He has left us, in what we know as the Sermon on the Mount, an epitome of the truths underlying his method of healing. It is to be noted that in this great sermon Christ Jesus does not recommend "a knowledge of the human body, a knowledge of how all its parts work, how they are related to one another,"—to quote the words of our medical friend. The Master does, however, give very definite and specific instruction to the contrary effect: "Take no thought for your life ... nor yet for your body,"—these are his words. Jesus emphasized the importance of the moral and spiritual qualities, such as mercy, purity, forgiveness, kindness. To know more of these qualities, and to practice them, as Christian Science is enabling its followers to do, is essential for the true healing of disease. The success that has attended Christian Science healing is due to the fact that Christian Science makes clear the Scriptural teaching that "God is love," and that man is the image and likeness of God; that man is therefore spiritual, not material. Our medical friends, as well as all others, would be well advised to gain a fuller understanding of the Science of divine Mind, which may be obtained by a study of Christian Science.
