In the infant steps in the journey Spiritward, the beginner...

In the infant steps in the journey Spiritward, the beginner in Christian Science finds that many of the suggestions of evil are so comouflaged, and so cleverly counterfeit the qualities of divine Mind, that it is often perplexing to know just where reality lies, until experience teaches the truth of the Bible passage, "By their fruits ye shall know them." With this understanding as a guide, the student proceeds thankfully onward in the task of separating the tares and the wheat, "mortal belief" and "immortal Truth," as Mrs. Eddy calls them in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 72), and finds he is harvesting a freedom from human ills he never before dreamed of.

My first healing in Christian Science, which occurred twenty years ago, was that of carious bone. Soon after this healing there came a call for help for a child suffering from a very acute condition resulting from croup. Thought was lifted by the proofs of God's omnipotence and omnipresence, and in consequence the absolute impossibility of there being any other power or presence was glimpsed. After a severe mental struggle it became possible to stand by this vision and hold to the truth of being, and not accept the myth as the reality. Harmony was manifested until to a thought filled with grateful outpouring to divine Love, Satan presented the suggestion, which was accepted, How wonderful for so young a student to make such a grand demonstration! Almost immediately the error was screaming as loudly as ever, and was accompanied by a wave of fear that threatened to engulf and wash away the memory of the fruits that had been tested and not found wanting. When I turned once more to God alone, it became clear that the straight and narrow way had been missed. It was soon discerned that pride has no copartnership with gratitude, and that personality can accomplish nothing, for "our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth," as it is written in Psalms. This understanding brought complete harmony and a realization of the heavenly manna Jesus partook of when the "angels came and ministered unto him."

In a family where there are four children, I have never since found it necessary to resort to a material remedy of any kind. We have been severely tried many times, and once one of the children had a very severe attack of cholera infantum and we were obliged to call a physician. He said the child could not live more than two hours. Then we had proof of God's supremacy; for through the faithful work of a practitioner not a trace of the disease remained.
