I became interested in Christian Science about four...
I became interested in Christian Science about four and a half years ago, although I had heard of it many years before. I had never taken an interest in other religions, although I had always been seeking the truth and wanted to know something about God. It was during a time when I was out of work that I took up the study of Christian Science. With a friend I attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. During this meeting a number of testimonies were given, and I noticed that the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was mentioned frequently. I became rather inquisitive about this book, and wanted to know what was in it; and the very next day I went out to buy one. I hurried home, and with great eagerness began to read; and I have been reading it ever since in all my spare time.
The good I have received from this book money never could buy. I was a slave to the tobacco habit, smoking and chewing, for nearly thirty years. I also had a desire for drink, sometimes to excess, and was addicted to profanity; but all these evils were overcome by reading this wonderful book. The tobacco-chewing habit and desire for drink were instantaneously overcome. I have never since at any time had these appetites. The smoking habit left me about two years later; also, at the same time the appetite for coffee disappeared, and I no longer drink it. I have learned what real pleasures are, and pleasures that seemed real but were not have vanished. To the material senses I have lost much; but spiritually I have gained much more,—but not all, for I can still see plenty yet to be won. When these false appetites were removed, the reason for their removal came to me mentally, and I saw it was not will-power but God, divine Truth, that had set me free. This unfoldment showed me clearly how Truth destroys all error. I have also been healed, through the loving help of a practitioner, of neuritis. Many other ills have been overcome, just through reading Science and Health.
Words cannot express my gratitude for the wonderful book, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy has given to the world; and I hope it will some day be read and enjoyed by all.
