An evangelist in a public address recently said that Christian Science denies every fundamental doctrine of the Bible. That is a very foolish statement to make. It is not only untrue, but easily proved to be untrue. A careful reading of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, should convince any unbiased reader of the fact, Certainly no one who has an understanding of Christian Science would make the statement attributed to the critic; and certainly no other should do so. The first of the religious tenets of Christian Science reads: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (Science and Health, p. 497). Christian Science makes the unqualified assertion that every fundamental doctrine of the Bible is demonstrable because it is of God, Truth; that nothing short of spiritual understanding can demonstrate Truth, and answer the demand of Christ Jesus, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." When his teaching is understood, there will be an inclination to practice it in preference to making attacks upon others who are trying to do so. "Without this understanding," writes Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 355), "no one is capable of impartial or correct criticism, because demonstration and spiritual understanding are God's immortal keynotes, proved to be such by our Master and evidenced by the sick who are cured and by the sinners who are reformed." Among the grand fundamental truths which Christian Science reveals in the sacred writings, and which are doing so much to redeem humanity, is this: that God created no evil, and that His divine purpose toward mankind is that of unchanging wisdome, goodness, and love.
