For six years previous to coming to Christian Science...
For six years previous to coming to Christian Science I had been under a physician's care the greater part of the time. My physician suggested the removal of the tip of my backbone. I had weeping sinews on both wrists. An extreme tenderness of the flesh of the back and arms likewise manifested itself. I was frequently subject to a stiff neck, of such a nature that I was unable to lie down or get up without assistance. I suffered from fallen arches and was unable to walk without supports in my shoes. Weariness reached the point of disease with me.
All this time I was also in bondage to my young son. I was compelled to lie with my hand stretched out to him through the night. He was subject to frightful dreams. He also suffered from attacks of fever that lasted a week or ten days, with a doctor in attendance.
When my husband first suggested to me that I try Christian Science, I was indignant and resentful. I said I was sick, and did not want any one to tell me I was not. A year later he suggested it again. I was angry, but the suggestion kept coming back. At last the muscles of my throat developed a painful condition; and after massage failed to relieve it, in desperation I called a woman who had told my husband Christian Science had blessed her, and asked how to get in touch with it. She sent me a Journal; and with an eagerness now as great as my previous reluctance had been, I read the list of practitioners and inarticulately prayed for guidance. The week that intervened between calling the practitioner and my appointment was the longest week I ever spent in my life. I left the practitioner's office as if walking on air. The ache in my throat was gone, never to return. I carried with me in my heart the most precious prescription I had ever been presented with,—the ninety-first psalm. At the Reading Room I secured the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began to read. I told my husband that night I had found the most wonderful thing in the world.
