A certain writer for the Advertiser and other papers...

Sunday Advertiser

A certain writer for the Advertiser and other papers sometimes speaks of Christian Science or Christian Scientists in a way that does not indicate adequate appreciation or understanding. In a recent issue of your paper, after asserting that vines can be taught to turn to the right as they climb, and that parts of the human blood can be taught to fight disease, he continued as follows: "That's puzzling, especially to Christian Scientists."

Now the fact is that Christian Scientists do not need to be, and usually are not, puzzled by material phenomena. Christian Science teaching, while inculcating a strictly spiritual view of reality, including creative power, consistently explains the seeming existence of material phenomena. For instance, when writing with reference to this subject, Mrs. Eddy has said in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 512) that mortal mind "puts forth its own qualities." In this way, Christian Science not only explains what seems to be the material phenomena of to-day, but also explains why it was different in many respects a decade or two ago, and why it may be very different at any time in the future.
