Before Mrs. Eddy discovered that the healing of sickness...
Times
Before Mrs. Eddy discovered that the healing of sickness and sin which Jesus practiced was based upon spiritual law, and was, therefore, scientific as well as Christian no one had ever thought of wedding the words "Christian" and "Science" in order to express the perfect unity of Science and Christianity. When Mrs. Eddy first did this, more than fifty years ago, she met with ridicule and persecution; but she kept bravely on, proving the truth of her teachings, until to-day, as your contributor says, "These words are constantly met with in the common speech of the Christian world." To-day hundreds of thousands of men and women, redeemed by its ministrations from sin, sickness, and strife, bless the name of Christian Science, and are grateful to her whose mission it was to turn their thoughts to the words and works of Christ Jesus, whose life on earth was the perfect demonstration of the Science of Life. Jesus taught men to know and love one God, his Father and their Father. He declared that God being Spirit, His worshipers must worship Him "in spirit and in truth." Therefore to speak of God as being a "personal God" is apt to be misleading, since by that expression we are liable to think of a material form, because the so-called human person is finite and material. Thinking thus materially, we are apt to lower our sense of Deity; for God is not corporeal, He is infinite Spirit. Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 116), "If the term personality, as applied to God, means infinite personality, then God is infinite Person,—in the sense of infinite personality, but not in the lower sense." In the same book (p. 272), Mrs. Eddy says: "It is the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life, in contrast with the results of the ghastly farce of material existence; it is chastity and purity, in contrast with the downward tendencies and earthward gravitation of sensualism and impurity, which really attest the divine origin and operation of Christian Science. The triumphs of Christian Science are recorded in the destruction of error and evil, from which are propagated the dismal beliefs of sin, sickness, and death."
