Christian Science is the antithesis of all forms of suggestion, including that known as hypnotism. Hypnotism is a supposed activity of the so-called material or human mind, the "carnal mind" which, Paul declared, is "enmity against God." This so-called mind is the seeming source of all the sin, sickness, discord, and inharmony which beset mortals—the source of everything opposed to God. Its processes are wholly material. Christian Science, on the other hand, is based solely on the Bible; and its successful healing work is accomplished through the understanding of God, Spirit, in the same manner and by the same method that was employed by Christ Jesus. It is, therefore, entirely spiritual.
The Bible tells us that on one occasion after Jesus had healed dumbness, so that "the dumb spake," the unbelievers of that day charged him with casting out devils through Beelzebub, the prince of devils. Jesus replied that "every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation;" which was only a different way of stating the truth he desired to bring home to his hearers, that the so-called human mind, which in belief produces disease, is powerless to heal it. He further enlightened them on the method by which his marvelous works were wrought, in these words: "But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you." Jesus promised that all who believed on (understood) him should do the works he did. It is in obedience to his commands, in accordance with his teaching, and in fulfillment of his promises that the healing work in Christian Science is done.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, speaking of "mental medicine" and so-called "mind cure," writes on page 185 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," as follows: "Such theories have no relationship to Christian Science, which rests on the conception of God as the only Life, substance, and intelligence, and excludes the human mind as a spiritual factor in the healing work."
