The Bible shows clearly the distinction between the Christ and Jesus. The name Jesus is identical with the Hebrew name Joshua, but it is not synonymous with Christ. When Christ Jesus said, "I am the light of the world," he was not referring to himself as Jesus, but to the eternal Christ, Truth. The Christ was revealed through Jesus in the truth he understood, lived, and demonstrated. Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, showed the way whereby all men may overcome the belief of life in matter, and the sin, disease, and death which are the outcome of that belief; but we all have to do the working out for ourselves as Paul encourages us to do.

Christian Science is not alone in its denial of a personal devil. Many other denominations now agree that the only devil there is, is the evil, carnal mind, which is "enmity against God." The carnal mind is overcome just to the extent that each individual learns to have the same Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus."

Christian Science does not deny the atonement. Christ Jesus showed the way whereby the atonement with God might be realized. Every one has to work out his own salvation from evil, and demonstrate man's unity with God. To the Christian Scientist, atonement is not an incident in his life; it is an hourly, daily putting off of "the old man" and the putting on of "the new." It is the ruling out of himself of all sin, and the establishing of the reign of divine Love.
