[Written for the Sentinel]

Sufficiency

Across the million miles of night
The beam that shines from younder star,
Bringing its message from afar,
Bears witness to the source of light.

In the great hymn of joy and awe,
All things created have their part;
From farthest worlds to inmost heart,
Love always manifests its law.

"Give us this day our daily bread,"
We pray; yet close our tear-dimmed eyes
To the wide radiance of Thy skies,
And seek for Life among the dead.

Our weak affection's narrow cup
Thirsts for the draught of living wine;
That Thou canst give, O power divine!
More grace! more grace to lift us up!

Fed by Thy truth we rise to prove
Our mast'ry over self of stone.
"Man shall not live by bread alone,"
But by the living Word of Love.
