[Written for the Sentinel]

The Search

I SOUGHT for Life.
Its secret deep,
Nor time nor space was giving:
Wealth failed its quest; and power, too.
Bereft of all save God, I knew
Life's found alone in living.

I sought for Truth
Among the weeds
That heresies were sowing;
Where creeds and intellect enslave.
These proven false, one hope can save,—
Truth's found alone in proving.

I sought for Love
Where human hearts
The joys of sense were testing;
Where charm and spell their power lose,
And passion dies, this Phoenix rose,—
Love's found alone in loving.
