Coming home one evening under the influence of liquor,...

Coming home one evening under the influence of liquor, like all men that do such things, I was driven into a fit of anger. In order to pull the curtain down on my shame, I used a lot of loud talking, thinking my condition would not be noticed; but our little girl, aged five, began to cry. To get her out of the way I carried her up to bed; and when I got her into bed, she said, "I wish you would tell me a little bit about God." I told her I did not know anything about Him, but for her sake I would go and find out something about Him. In my search I was directed to the Christian Science church, where every one took me by the hand and greeted me cordially. The first testimony I heard was given by a friend of mine who had been healed of consumption; and it also healed me of all fear of consumption. My mother having passed on with that belief, I always thought that every cold I got would be my last one. My continued attendance at church was rewarded, for the little girl's question was answered one Sunday morning. I heard read from the desk, "In him we live, and move, and have our being." My study of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, has since made me acquainted with the fact that the foregoing statement from the Bible is the truth; and through understanding it I was healed of the appetite for liquor and tobacco.

The love of God that Mrs. Eddy has expressed to the world is evidence of the "gentle presence" (Poems, p. 4) that is coming to the consciousness of all who study her works.—JOSEPH H. DUXBURY, Philadelphia, Pa.
