After devoting about one year trying to prove that Mrs. Eddy's writings were not in accordance with the teachings of the Bible, of which I had long been a student, having taught in a so-called orthodox Sunday school for eight years or more, I was led to a loving Christian Science practitioner who was ready and willing to help me overcome my big problem of old theology, which, it was quite evident, was trying to rob me of the truth and of everything else. I used to read the weekly Lesson, as given in the Christian Science Quarterly, very critically. I was continually trying to find a verse in the Bible reading which would disprove everything Mrs. Eddy tells us in her writings. Every time I thought I had found even one sentence to support my claim, I found almost immediately afterward a beautiful explanation for my query, either in our periodicals or in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; or else a practitioner would lovingly show me the way out of the darkness.
I did not accept this blessed gift as a little child; but in time I learned to know that Christian Science is, indeed, the "law of God," as Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1),—"the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." To-day, I am grateful that "the kindly shepherd of the East carries his lambs in his arms to the sheepcot, but the older sheep pass into the fold under his compelling rod" (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 80). So I understand the Bible verse which tells us that it is only a question of time when "they shall all know me [God], from the least of them unto the greatest of them."
I did not come to Christian Science for healing of physi cal ills. I quickly learned to love the logic of its scientific statements,—that is what held me,—but I was slow in understanding how these facts had anything to do with Christianity. Since accepting the truth as revealed and taught by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, I have been healed of constipation, for which I received no specific treatments, of colds, of sore feet, of sorrow, of a sense of fatigue which had been with me for years, of a false sense of position,—that is, of place both in business and at home. I could write much of the many healings I have received through the teachings of Christian Science, all of which have been very interesting and wonderful to me; but I am most grateful for the better understanding I have gained of God and His universe, of the spiritual creation, as delineated in the first chapter of the first book of the Bible, and for the complete change which has come into my whole being since accepting this glorious religion.
