Primarily, I was not attracted to Christian Science by the need of physical healing; but the "little book," "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was the gift from above while I was struggling long and in vain to see clearly as to the questions of individual freedom in one's life-work, untrammeled by tradition, family bands, and public opinion. Also, starting my practical working life just after the World War began, and appreciating more and more the far-reaching consequences of that upheaval, I began to fear I should never see clearly in regard to all the vast questions concerning nations as well as individuals, though feeling all the time that there must be some underlying truth governing all phenomena, from the least to the greatest.
Having been very fond of arithmetic while at school, I often thought how wonderful it would be to have such definite rules and laws for one's life as well. I remember that while staying at an educational place in Switzerland on the occasion of some school festival, I complained to an acquaintance that I had not been able to go to college and graduate as engineer, instead of going into business, believing then that college training and the attaining of some college degree would have given me that dominion over life for which I had sought. With deep thankfulness I am advancing steadily to perceive how much more my heavenly Father has given me in Christian Science in answer to my hungering and thirsting after righteousness. Like the prodigal, I was satisfied to be fed with the husks, until divine Love gave me the inspiration to go straight to my Father Himself, finding not only existence and work with a just master, but my sonship. This came to me through Christian Science, embodied in the teachings and practice of our great Exemplar, Christ Jesus, and now explained for practical application by our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
While I have been thus growing in strength and spiritual understanding, there have arisen many occasions when Christian Science has been my help and deliverer, either through a loving practitioner or through my own application of the truth. By the aid of a practitioner I was freed from abscesses, one on my left hand and others all over my legs, a condition pronounced very serious by a reputed physician, who was consulted at the request of my parents. Later on, a bladder trouble of many years' standing, which caused at times much worry and irritation, disappeared after I had learned to rely on this "trumpet-word of Truth, 'There is no death, no inaction, diseased action, overaction, nor reaction'" (Science and Health, pp. 427, 428).
