Since Christian Science heals by spiritually correcting...
Times
Since Christian Science heals by spiritually correcting both thinking and living, it is not unusual for one to be healed by spiritually comprehending some part of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; but such cases are not in any sense the perfunctory saying over of a few words. The truth is that there have been multitudes of people healed of phases of sin and sickness by reading this textbook; such reading, however, is never the mere saying of the words, but a reading which unfolds spiritual understanding, whereby man's real being and his relationship to God are revealed.
Christian Science, as a spiritual religion, in no way resorts to manipulation, mesmerism, or magnetism. It is based upon the law of God; and its healing of sickness and sin is through the prayer of spiritual understanding. Christian Science utterly refutes all the alleged laws of physicality and matter, and demonstrates the power of Spirit, God, proving that material beliefs, manifested as physical ills, yield to the power of God in proportion to one's understanding of the law of God. Christian Science and suggestion are in no way similar. Suggestion is the operation of the human will, and is the process of one human mind controlling or influencing another. The use of human will-power is dangerous and undesirable, for it places the weaker mentality in subjection to the stronger, and would rob the subject of his individuality. It "is capable of all evil," Mrs. Eddy says on page 206 of Science and Health; and unscrupulous and evil-minded people may grossly misuse it and produce all manner of evil, unless the individual manipulated understands how to protect himself. Mrs. Eddy also says (Science and Health, pp. 144, 445): "Human will-power is not Science. Human will belongs to the so-called material senses, and its use is to be condemned. Willing the sick to recover is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism. Human will-power may infringe the rights of man. It produces evil continually, and is not a factor in the realism of being;" and, "Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick."
