I have felt for some time that I should express my gratitude...
I have felt for some time that I should express my gratitude through the Journal or Sentinel for the many blessings received since taking up the study of Christian Science; thereby, perhaps, helping some one who may feel the discouragement which I felt at the time I turned to Science for relief from physical trouble that the physicians had pronounced incurable,—a so-called malignant growth in the throat. In 1916 I submitted to an operation, feeling that anything was better than the suffering I was passing through. For a short time there was relief, but the trouble returned in a worse form. I went again to the sanitarium, expecting to have a second operation, but was then told nothing further could be done for me, and was given to understand the end might be soon. While returning to my home, I met a lady who asked why I did not try Christian Science. My answer was that I had no faith in it; but after listening to all the good she said of it, I accepted the address of a practitioner, and later wrote for treatment and a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After a few treatments, however, seeming to receive very little benefit, I became discouraged, stopped the treatments, and laid the book away. I seemed to fail rapidly after that, and was only looking forward, and almost anxiously, for the end.
About this time I was visited by a very dear friend who, I knew, had been interested in Christian Science for some time, and, not that I looked for any help, but to please her and other friends, I consented to take absent treatment again, thinking it could do no harm if no good came from it. At that time I could get around the house only a little, and that with great difficulty. The slightest exertion would often cause severe choking spells. I cannot express in words my surprise and gratitude at the improvement which took place. Almost immediately it was noticeable; and in less than three weeks I went by train to the house of my friend and continued with present treatments for a few weeks. My healing was perfect.
Since then I have had many proofs of the power of Truth over error when applied as taught in Christian Science; for all of which I am very thankful. I am far more grateful, however, for the spiritual light I am gaining each day from the study of the Bible with the aid of Science and Health, which is indeed a "key" to the Scriptures, teaching me that God is Love.
