About thirteen years ago, my husband made the remark, "I think I will send for 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' and see what it is like; I have heard that many people have been healed by reading that book." Knowing it was the textbook of Christian Science, I quickly urged him to have nothing to do with it, for all my life I had had an unreasonable prejudice against what I thought Christian Science was.
Some time later, my husband visited a Christian Science practitioner, and was healed of stomach trouble, from which he had suffered for over twenty years, and was wonderfully benefited in many other ways. He wanted me to take up the study; but I was still bitterly opposed to it. Realizing I had nothing upon which to stand, I consented to read the textbook, solely to find a better platform from which to continue my arguments against it. Before I had finished the first chapter I was completely healed of all prejudice; it was wonderful to me. I commenced at once to put the truth it taught into practice and to prove its worth.
I had worn glasses since I was ten years old, and had been told by specialists that I would always have to wear them. After getting a glimpse of this truth, I realized that I did not need to be in bondage to this false belief; so I took them off and continued my reading. I have never had to put them on since that day. This was a wonderful proof to me; and I continued to apply what I had learned of this truth. Gradually, sick headaches, extreme nervousness, and many other discordant conditions were entirely overcome. From that time on I have been striving to gain a better understanding of divine Principle as revealed by Christian Science.
I wish to tell of a beautiful healing our son experienced. We were living fifteen miles out in the country, when he was taken ill with acute pneumonia. We applied our understanding of Christian Science, but he grew alarmingly worse. The next day he was unconscious, unable to move hand or foot, and was in a high fever; so we wired a Christian Science practitioner, miles away, for help. She received the message at nine o'clock the next day. By noon the boy was conscious, free from fever, and wanted something to eat. That evening he came to the table and ate a hearty supper. The next day he played outdoors all day long. The third day, every evidence of weakness had disappeared, and he was entirely well. About two years after this experience, I was healed of Bright's disease. The same practitioner worked faithfully and earnestly for six weeks, when every evidence of the disease vanished.
Another beautiful proof of God's ever present help was experienced in November, 1920. When leaving the home of a friend, I started to go downstairs, but missed my footing and fell headlong to the bottom. In the attempt to pick myself up, I found that the bones in the left arm were broken. My friend, being a student of Science, helped me to my feet, and also helped me to know that nothing could harm God's child. In about ten minutes I was able to go on my way. Having another errand, I attended to it on the way home; but on leaving, the pain and nausea became so distressing that I asked my friend to give me a treatment. Before I had gone a block I was wonderfully relieved, and I got along nicely that night. The next day I had a great struggle with the suggestion that I should go to a surgeon and have the bones set, so I called the practitioner and told her of the struggle I was having. She told me she would help me. After two treatments all fear was destroyed, and I was able to do my own mental work from that time on. The arm was never bandaged, nor was it put in a sling. In three weeks all evidence of the accident had disappeared. The arm is now as straight and as strong as the other. During that time I was able to go right along, taking care of all my regular duties.
I am indeed grateful for the privilege of class instruction, and for membership in The Mother Church, as well as in our branch church; also for the many physical healings I have had. But greater than the physical healing is the healing going on daily in my consciousness, as I gain a better understanding of God and of man's relation to Him. It is indeed the "Life that maketh all things new."
I am also grateful that I have been able to help others. I am daily striving to be more worthy to be called a Christian Scientist, a follower of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose pure life has given the wonderful truth of Christian Science to this age.
(Mrs.) Angelia H. Karr, Rapid City, S. Dak.
I am glad to say the above is true, but it tells of only a small part of what Christian Science has done for us. We have proved that by it "the blind see, the lame walk, ... the deaf hear;" and I can also say that we have seen the dying restored to perfect health and activity, after being abandoned by medical doctors.—
George A. Karr.
