The Lectures
Stockholm, Sweden (Society).—Introducing John W. Doorly, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Miss Gerda Nordenstierna spoke as follows:—
Jesus said: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." How many of the sick, weary, and sorrowful have yearned to understand the meaning of these words of our Master and to find the answer to life's great question, "Whence and whither?" Jesus' disciples and the Christians during the first three centuries after Jesus' time comprehended the spirit of Truth so fully, that they healed the sick and even raised the dead; but the source of this healing was not then expressed as a Science, available to all. This wonderful mission was given to a woman of our day, was given to Mary Baker Eddy, who was humble and pure enough to understand the significance of Jesus' words, "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." And this Comforter, which Mrs. Eddy called Christian Science and which she interpreted to us in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," teaches us truly how to understand Jesus' words and promises. It teaches us to understand the words: "My peace I give unto you;" "And your joy no man taketh from you;" "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine." It teaches us to understand the deep significance of Jesus' words, when he spoke of the woman who had been bound by sickness for eighteen years, and also the meaning of the words, "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God."
I myself have been healed through Christian Science from sickness and sorrow, and saved from what the doctors called inevitable death. In three days I was healed of paralysis of the bowels, from which I had been suffering for fifteen years. I have been instantaneously healed from an abscess in the throat; and just as instantaneously lifted from the valley of death, when by mistake I had taken poison. According to material laws, I had taken more poison than three strong men together could have lived through. I lost the power to see, and my limbs seemed to be paralyzed. Then came to my consciousness, as a ray of light, the underlying truth of Christian Science, forming itself into the question, "What is there in me that can die, when God is man's life?" and I was healed as a result of Mrs. Eddy's wonderful revelation of Truth. But Mrs. Eddy not only discovered Christian Science, and wrote its textbook and other books, she also knew how to build her church on the rock of Christ, how to protect it through wise church By-laws, as well as to establish different branches of spiritual activity within the church, such as The Christian Science Board of Lectureship.
