Christian Science, being based solely and unequivocally...
Daily Camera
Christian Science, being based solely and unequivocally on the Bible, accepts the Scriptural pronouncements that "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good;" "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made;" and, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity." Evidently, Christ Jesus, that most scientific of all Christians, worked and taught from the standpoint of the omnipotence and omnipresence of good, and the consequent impotence and unreality of evil; for he said plainly that sickness, as well as sin, is from Satan, whom he designated as a liar and the father, not of realities, but of lies. Why, then, should professed preachers of Christian doctrine attack Christian Science for reiterating the Master's teaching, and verifying its precepts in practice, as did he, by overcoming both sin and sickness by spiritual means only?
Mrs. Eddy's use of the term "mortal mind" seems to trouble some critics; but any honest seeker after truth will have the point cleared when he learns that she is thereby referring to the "carnal mind," spoken of by Paul as "enmity against God." Mrs. Eddy's words, to be found on page 354 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," are obviously applicable here: "The opponents of divine Science must be charitable, if they would be Christian. If the letter of Christian Science appears inconsistent, they should gain the spiritual meaning of Christian Science, and then the ambiguity will vanish. The charge of inconsistency in Christianly scientific methods of dealing with sin and disease is met by something practical,—namely, the proof of the utility of these methods; and proofs are better than mere verbal arguments or prayers which evince no spiritual power to heal." Opponents of Christian Science, in referring to it, are fond of using the catch phrase "falsely so called," but the steady and irresistible advance and spread of Christian Science shows that the repetition of false phrases cannot discredit the true Science of Christianity. When Paul warned Timothy against the "oppositions of science falsely so called" he plainly indicated that there is the true Science or exact knowledge of God. Christian Science is just what its name implies, the exact, provable knowledge of God; and this can be verified by any honest seeker who will study and obey its teachings.
