On March 4, 1922, my dress caught fire from the gas...

On March 4, 1922, my dress caught fire from the gas heater. My little girl and I were alone at the time. I did not know I was on fire until she screamed. The flames were above my waist then, and were spreading all around me. The only thing that came to me was, "Be not afraid." I glanced around the room and saw there was nothing I could use to smother the fire, and knew that if I ran it would make matters worse; so with my hands I beat the flames out, rubbing the burning clothing all around, me. I cannot tell how I did it, but soon the flames were out; then I saw that my hands were burned crisp and looked charred. I quickly rolled them in the little piece of my dress that was left in front. My daughter called a Christian Science practitioner, and then she began reading aloud from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, while I walked the floor for an hour declaring the truth aloud. After a time I found myself saying the "scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). Then for nearly another hour I sang hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. By that time I was free from all pain; and also, the tendency to faint was gone. Toward evening the fear of losing my hands was overcome, so I felt that the burnt cloth could be removed, and my hands were wrapped in a clean cloth; but in making the change I got a glimpse of them, and nearly lost consciousness. My need was, however, quickly met again, as the practitioner called on the telephone in a few minutes, and while my daughter held the receiver to my ear he spoke reassuringly, saying, "You are not going to be disabled." It seemed as though God had spoken to me. My fear was gone at once, and from then on I was able to rejoice in the realization of God's presence and supreme power. The healing that so quickly followed was wonderful. Material law was proved null and void. A sense of peace and spiritual uplift pervaded the home and was felt by every member. The following Thursday the bandages were removed, and I was able to use my hands to feed myself. The flesh was restored and healed. The next day I could comb my hair, and began doing all my usual tasks. Within two weeks the healing was perfect.

It seems vain to try to express gratitude for such a heal ing as this, as words are totally inadequate to do it. It is but one of the many healings we have had in our home during the past nine years, since we have been depending on God alone as our help in every time of trouble. This verse from Isaiah kept coming to me following my healing: "I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God." I am a very grateful witness to the healing and redeeming power of Christian Science. Through its teachings I have been redeemed from sickness, worry, fear, and unhappiness, and have come to realize health and peace and joy as my heritage. I am also learning to love God supremely and my neighbor as myself, because through the blessed teachings of Christian Science I have learned to know God and my neighbor aright.

The following little verse I once memorized, with the prayer that I might sometime repeat it to others as true for myself:
