Christian Science was discovered in the year 1866

Halifax (England) Courier and Guardian

Christian Science was discovered in the year 1866. It is natural that the teaching which stands for the freedom and the liberty of the sons of God should first appear in a land which is not mentally limited by a state religion, with its creeds and dogmas.

Although the admission is made that Christian Science has brought to the front "that long-neglected special feature of Christian teaching, namely, faith-healing," it is necessary to point out that Christian Science includes more than is commonly understood by that term. This may imply a blind faith or trust,—a submission to what is believed to be a mandate of a changeable God, as is expressed in the statement, "If it is God's will that he will get better he will do so; otherwise he will not." The faith that Christ Jesus demanded included no element of doubt or uncertainty. He said, "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." In every case he demonstrated that the will of his Father was that the patient should be healed. There is no record of a failure on his part to prove this. If our Master had approached any case with a doubting spirit, he could not have proved in the way he did that sickness, sin, and death are lawless.

Mrs. Eddy points out that faith is higher than belief, and writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 297), "Until belief becomes faith, and faith becomes spiritual understanding, human thought has little relation to the actual or divine." The healing in Christian Science is not the outcome of the action of the human mind or will, but is the direct result of its subjugation, through the understanding of the nature and character of the divine Mind, the Mind of Christ. The claims of Christian Science are not pretentious; rather are they found by the unbiased inquirer to be understated. No good results at any time from extravagant claims which cannot be proved.
