A correspondent in a recent issue of your paper is mistaken...

Webster County Argus

A correspondent in a recent issue of your paper is mistaken in assuming that the healing and corrective influence in Christian Science is "the concentrated power of the human will," and that the "power of the will and love for others" can combine in action in scientific demonstration. On page 144 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written: "Willing the sick to recover is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism. Human will-powermay infringe the rights of man. It produces evil continually, and is not a factor in the realism of being. Truth, and not corporeal will, is the divine power which says to disease, 'Peace, be still.'"

All of Mrs. Eddy's writings advance the fact that not only all the ills of the flesh, but also all wars, failures, and discords of every name and nature, are chargeable directly to the so-called human mind, which has ever been a liar and deceiver. Mind, which Mrs. Eddy makes plain is the healer, is no less than God, infinite Love. This is the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus;" and, when we are governed by this Mind, we are not in bondage to the body but living in obedience to God, and thus we gain the conscious control over the body. On page 216 of the Christian Science textbook Mrs. Eddy has stated, "If man is governed by the law of divine Mind, his body is in submission to everlasting Life and Truth and Love."

The supposition that "Christian Scientists, without knowing it, have accomplished their results through sheer devotion to Mrs. Eddy and her memory" is incorrect. While they revere their beloved Leader, and honestly accredit her with the great work she wrought, still they look to God as the power in the healing ministration, and they have to know by what means the results are achieved or they have nothing to demonstrate.
