In the fall of 1904, after ten years of ill health and semi-invalidism...

In the fall of 1904, after ten years of ill health and semi-invalidism with its attendant trial of various medicines, material remedies, and treatments, searching without finding for that which would bring health and freedom, a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was lent me by a dear friend. The book was opened at the chapter on Prayer; and as the first sentence on page 1 was read, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love," a peace which has never left me was felt, and I knew that the long-sought-for remedy had been found.

Several years after this my testimony was printed in one of the Christian Science periodicals, in which I told of the health, happiness, and freedom gained through the study of the Bible together with this textbook, and the occasional help of a Christian Science practitioner. My recovery was contrary to the opinion of four physicians, who had said that without an operation the time for me to live would be short. According to so-called medical laws, no human being could pass through such an experience as I went through, and live; and the restoration to perfect health came in a few months. This is mentioned with the hope of encouraging some weary seeker for the way to health and happiness, and also to say that during all the years since I have never remained in bed a day on account of illness. Physicians' services have never been sought; nor has a material remedy ever been used either by my husband or by me. God has been our only physician; and the truth contained in the words already quoted from the Christian Science textbook has been proved over and over again.

Gratitude for Christian Science cannot be expressed in words. It expresses itself in a deeper, truer love for God and man. It enables one to strive more earnestly, humbly, and patiently to overcome all that would try to prevent him from being conscious daily and hourly of the ever present and allpowerful God; and it also enables him to understand and appreciate more fully each day, with an ever increasing reverence, the life-work of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy.
