People are drawn to Christian Science from every walk...
Aberdeen Daily Journal
People are drawn to Christian Science from every walk of life because in it they find the teachings of our Master made practical in the healing of the sick through spiritual means, as well as commands regarding the preaching of the gospel (good news). It satisfies the logician and the true metaphysician; it reconciles reason to revelation; it dethrones evil and enthrones God, good, in His infinitude. Our critic has yet to learn that thoughts of envy, hatred, jeslousy, anger, lust, and impurity are the thoughts that cause human discord. Christian Science is engaged in destroying these thoughts and bringing to the patient the Mind of Christ, which heals and regenerates. Mrs. Eddy denies the reality of sin, disease, and death because they are not the creations of God: they are temporal falsities, and have got to be destroyed before the kingdom of God can be realized "in earth, as it is in heaven." The meaning of sin in the original is "missing the mark, not shooting straight." The mark is God's infinitude, and we miss it when we believe in anything apart from Him. If sin, disease, and death were realities, as our critic avers, how could we ever hope to get rid of them? And yet Christian warfare is against the world, the flesh, and the devil, which have got to be destroyed, as Jesus destroyed them.
To say that "drug-like preparations do cure in many instances in just the same manner as Christian Science" is to reveal a complete ignorance of the method by which Christian Science heals. Christian Science has nothing in common with suggestion; in fact, Christian Science healing differs from all other so-called mental methods, in that it reveals eternal Truth, through the Mind of Christ, that operates through Christian Science in contradistinction to the effects produced by the carnal mind, and expressed through hypnotism, mesmerism, autosuggestion, etc. In the twelfth chapter of Matthew our Master makes a very clear distinction between his method of healing and the methods of the carnal mind. In speaking of his own method, he said, "If I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." In describing the so-called methods of the carnal mind he said, "When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return unto my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first." Our critic does not seem to know that Christian Science is the only form of Christianity to-day that enables one, according to his spiritual understanding, to say to the sick, "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise and walk."
