The Lectures

Kansas City, Mo. (Second Church). —The following introduction by George B. Ewing was given to a lecture delivered by Miss Mary G. Ewing:—

Few people are satisfied or contented without some kind of religious conviction. It is, as it were, an anchor which holds and sustains them in times of sorrow, or during the storms and stress of human experience. Many people take religion very seriously, and consider a solemn attitude or a long face essential as indicative of their religious fervor. With some people religion is purely superficial, and is simply a matter of rites and ceremonies, without that deep or abiding conviction which makes them love and reverence God, the Giver of all good. With other, religious expression is based upon fear or superstition, and therefore is not conducive to that enlightenment and freedom which belong to the children of God. True religion should bring to humanity peace, joy, health, harmony, and dominion. Paul said, "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." Jesus proved by his works that his religion was from God and was based on divine Principle. His was the religion of Love. The Christian Science religion is the religion taught and practiced by Jesus. It is livable, practical, demonstrable. Christian Scientists are proving their religion every day; and it enables them to rejoice because they have evidence that God's saving and protecting power is a present reality. Therefore, they are a happy, healthy, contented people. To quote from one of our hymns.
