Permit me to state to your readers, in response to a statement in a recent issue of your paper, by a clergyman, that Christian Science is neither "Christian nor Science," that Christian Scientists accept the definition of "Christian," given in Webster's dictionary as "one whose inward and outward life is conformed to the doctrines of Christ." Christian Science is teaching mankind, in ever increasing numbers, how to conform their lives to Christ's teaching. Jesus said of his true followers, "They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover;" also, "By their fruits ye shall know them." Christian Scientists, accepting these statements of the Master as the test of a true Christian, are endeavoring to conform their lives to this standard, and are experiencing the proofs which he said would "follow them that believe."
Referring again to a dictionary, the word "science" is defined as "truth ascertained; that which is known; true knowledge." In the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, can be found the true and correct statement of Christian Science, and the rules for its demonstration; thousands of sincere seekers have been, and are being, redeemed from sin and healed of sickness through the application of the correct understanding of God, as taught in Christian Science; thus proving that it is Science.
Surely, no Christian who does not heal the sick through the power of God is in a position to discredit the Science and Christianity of the system which does; neither can he afford to speak lightly of this system, lest he be found fighting against God. In James we read, "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
