Since coming into Christian Science, some ten years ago,...

Since coming into Christian Science, some ten years ago, I am thankful to say that nearly all my problems have been met through my understanding of Truth, gained from the study of Mrs. Eddy's writings. When I have felt the need of a Christian Science practitioner, I have found great comfort in her loving presence. However, we must guard ourselves from the danger of depending on personality instead of on divine Principle. Through two very remarkable physical healings, besides obtaining freedom from several minor conditions during the past year, I have learned this lesson as well as others, that neither the name under which error masquerades nor the presence of the practitioner is absolutely essential to a Christian Science healing. "Speak the word only," said the centurion, whose faith the Master commended, "and my servant shall be healed." I am giving this testimony in the hope that it may help others, as it has helped me, to stand more confidently on Principle as the healing power than ever before; and also for the encouragement of those who live where it is not always possible to secure the services of a practitioner in person.

For some weeks I had been ill with what seemed to be typhoid fever, the symptoms being the same as when I had suffered from that disease formerly. The services of a practitioner were not available at the time, and I was working in Science alone. I managed to keep on my feet, but could not overcome the fever and lethargy. While in this condition I was stricken with pneumonia; and although I was able to keep fear from mastering me, I felt the need of help. A friend recommended that I call on a practitioner who had helped him, but who lived in another city. I wrote him at once, and absent treatment was given; and what to me was a miracle of healing resulted. In less than two weeks I was able to return to my work; and although still in a somewhat weakened condition, I walked through snow and sleet and chilling winds, without ill effect. I do not feel this testimony would be complete without stating that I am sixty-seven years of age.

Some time later it was again necessary to telegraph for help to this same practitioner, whom I have never yet seen. I merely said that to sense I was a very sick woman; for what the complaint was I did not then know, although I later learned that it had been what was considered a new malady, just coming into fashion, very closely related to smallpox, and considered contagious. However, wonderful to relate, I was back at work after a week's absence, feeling firstrate. I count the suffering as nothing when compared to the spiritual uplift gained while passing through the furnace.
